Assembly to propose Bharat Ratna for PV

Chief Minister K. Chandrashe­kar Rao on Friday said the Assembly, which will meet from September 7, will pass a resolution demanding that the Centre confer the Bharat Ratna on former prime minister P.V. Narasimha Rao.

“We will discuss the greatness of PV and his achievemen­ts in the Assembly. We have decided to have a comprehens­ive debate on PV. We will pass a resolution urging the Centre to confer the Bharat Ratna on PV,” the Chief Minister said.

“We have decided to instal a portrait of PV in the Assembly and request the Centre to instal a portrait in Parliament. We will ask the Centre to rename the University of Hyderabad, which was establishe­d by PV as P.V.

It was decided to establish a memorial at a suitable place in Hyderabad which will showcase the contributi­ons to various fields made by Narasimha Rao.

The Chief Minister was speaking during a review of the PV centenary celebratio­ns, at Pragathi Bhavan. It was decided to rename Necklace Road as PV Gnana Marg and develop gardens all along the road and instal Narasimha Rao’s statue there.

It was decided to establish a memorial at a suitable place in Hyderabad which will showcase the contributi­ons to various fields made by Narasimha Rao.

Stating that as the centenary celebratio­ns will continue for a year, Chandrashe­kar Rao suggested that the members of PV Centenary Celebratio­ns Committee plan the programme keeping the Covid-19 situation in view and also hold grand celebratio­ns after the relaxation of pandemic guidelines.

The meeting resolved to develop Laknepally, the village where Narasimha Rao was born, and Vangara, where he grew up, as tourist spots.

It was proposed to request the Unesco to constitute awards in the name of the former PM to be presented to persons who have made rich contributi­ons in the fields of literature, science and technology. The Telangana state government would arrange for the cash prize, he said.

The Chief Minister also reviewed the arrangemen­ts being made to conduct centenary celebratio­ns in the US, Singapore, South

Africa, Malaysia, Mauritius, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and other countries.

Stating that Narasimha Rao had excellent personal relations with several world leaders when he was external affairs minister and later as Prime Minister, Chandrashe­kar Rao asked the committee members to invite former US president Bill Clinton, former UK premiers John Major and David Cameron for the celebratio­ns.

The CM said he would personally write invitation letters to President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Chief Ministers of various states to participat­e in the celebratio­ns.

The former PM’s daughter Vani Devi presented books written by her on Narasimha Rao to the Chief Minister during the meeting.
