78,487 Covid cases see India cross the 36-lakh mark

With a record surge of

78,487 fresh Coronaviru­s cases in the past 24 hours, India’s Covid-19 tally zoomed past 36 lakh on Sunday, just a week after it crossed the 30-lakh mark. India saw one of the highest single-day jumps in Coronaviru­s infections reported by any country in the world since the start of the pandemic. The United States set the previous record on July 17, with 77,638 cases in one day. In the past 24 hours, 906 deaths linked to the highly contagious disease were reported, taking the overall number of fatalities to 64,547.

The country further strengthen­ed its diagnostic capacity by performing a record number of

10.5 lakh-plus tests in a day to detect Covid-19. The total tests done in the country has crossed 4.14 crores.

The exponentia­l jump in testing capacity has led to an upsurge in the tests per million to 30,044 as of date.

India continued to be the third worst-hit country by the deadly infection in the world after the

United States and Brazil, by recording the highest single-day surge since August 4. The country has recorded over 75,000 cases daily for the past four days.

It took India 213 days to reach 35 lakh cases. The nation’s infections rose from 20 lakhs to 30 lakhs in 16 days, 10 lakhs to 20 lakhs in 21 days and it had taken 59 days for the cases to cross the 10 lakhmark.

The country has registered over five lakh cases in the last one week. In the last 24 hours, Maharashtr­a, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh reported the highest number of fresh cases.

With the total Coronaviru­s cases going up to 35.44 lakhs, the recovery rate has also increased to 76.61 per cent.

The country’s positivity rate now stands at 7.46 per cent.
