Muharram rally violators booked

Hyderabad police on Monday registered six cases of violation of lockdown guidelines during the Muharram procession on Sunday.

The cases were registered in the Charminar, Mirchowk, Chaderghat, Rein Bazaar and Dabeerpura police stations following complaints made by police officers on bandobast duty.

The police took suo motu action against the organisers of the Muharram procession stating that they violated the orders of the government took out a procession and also performed khooni matam (self-flagellati­on), which is detrimenta­l to the health of thousands of civilians in a pandemic. Police registered cases under the IPC, Epidemic Disease Act, 1987 and Disaster Management Act, 2005.

It claimed that they violated the orders issued by the additional commission­er of

police. Cases were booked against the organisers including a zakkir (sermoniser), two alam bardaars (stand holders) an advocate, few media persons and a politician among them.

Imamia Ithna Ashari Akhbari, who approached the High Court seeking direction for allowing the permit to Bibi ka Alam procession on an elephant, Qamuruddin Alam Bradar, TV channel reporters Hassanuddi­n Ejaz Alam Bradar Hasham and Mujtuba Ali, Akhbari, Jaffer Hussain, advocate, Firasath Ali Baqri (BJP) and Najaf Ali Shoukath, (president of Matami Gurohan) were included. Chaderghat police booked a case against 33 persons.
