Increased humidity during the monsoons aggravates problems related to oily and acne-prone skin, leaving the skin dehydrated and dull. This calls for a change in your skincare regimen because even skin experts vouch that the right skincare can help one acquire healthy skin and keep infections at bay.

The good news is that neem and turmeric — two of the most commonly found ingredients across the country — are all you might need to ward off uninvited marks on your face as well as other skin issues.

As mentioned in Indian Ayurveda literature, neem has been used widely in India since timei mmemorial for its antiinfective properties. Filled with numerous bioactive compounds, neem is known for its antifungal, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. No surprise that it is one of the main ingredients in most cosmetic products. Turmeric has antiseptic properties that also help in dealing with an array of skin concerns.

CLEAN AND CLEAR

Dr. Sushrutha C.K, an Ayurveda expert at the research and development wing of The Himalaya Drug Company, tells us that neem and turmeric have been proven to contain incredible properties that are extremely beneficial for our skin. “Their anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties relieve skin infections, providing a healthy and natural glow. Using soaps infused with the goodness of neem and turmeric is especially good for the skin as those ingredients wash away environmental impurities that cause skin issues,” says the doctor.

Dr. Rinky Kapoor, dermatologist and dermatosurgeon at The Esthetic Clinics, points out the medicating properties of neem. “Neem is rich in Vitamin E, omega fatty acids (linoleic and oleic acids), triglycerides, carotenoids and about 130 different types of chemical and biological compounds, which help treat several skin issues such as acne scars, breakouts, hyperpigmentation spots, dry skin, dark circles, blackheads and white heads,” asserts Dr. Rinky.

Dr. Rinky also talks about the properties in turmeric, which contains combinations of Vitamins C, E and K, curcumin and minerals such as potassium, calcium, zing and magnesium. “While both turmeric and neem provide a multitude of benefits to the skin and one’s health, turmeric in particular adds a glow to the skin while fighting several skin issues. It also acts as a good exfoliator, prevents ingrown hair, evens out the skin tone and treats blemishes,” she adds.

All said and done, Dr. Rinky, however, advises caution even with these products. For instance, she warns that firsttime users might experience adverse effects. “Those using these ingredients for the first time must preferably start with some low-concentration formulations. Also, remember that when used alone, both neem and turmeric can dry out the skin. So ensure you moisturise your skin especially if you have dry to normal skin,” she suggests.
