Heavy rains continue to batter twin cities
IMD warns of similar weather for next 48 hours
Heavy rains lashed the city for the second day in a row and the ordeal of waterlogged roads, fallen trees and inundated areas that began on Wednesday continued on Thursday as well.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the weather will remain the same for the next 48 hours. For the city, it has issued a heavy rainfall warning lasting four days, till September 21.
While the rains were heavy in the Old City and the newer parts of the city on Wednesday, the situation was reversed on Thursday. Many parts of Secunderabad received heavy rainfall.
As of 8.30 pm, the highest rainfall was recorded at Balanagar at 71.5 mm. This was followed by
Malkajgiri at 54.5 mm. In the state, Bejgaon in Gadwal district received the highest rainfall measuring 86.8 mm.
Following the IMD warning, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) commissioner Lokesh
Kumar asked the monsoon emergency and disaster response teams to be on their toes.
Due to the rainfall, boulders from a hillock fell on the fourth lane (Rajendranagar Exit-16) on the Outer Ring Road (ORR) Wednesday night.
It was removed by officials of the Hyderabad Growth Corridor Limited and ORR on Thursday noon.
The GHMC received 205 complaints of rain-related issues, from waterlogging to the uprooting of trees, from building to wall collapses. While the highest number of complaints between Wednesday and 6 pm on Thursday were those pertaining to waterlogging (126), those pertaining to damage to roads (45) followed.
On the electricity front, officials of the Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TSSPDCL) said that five feeders had tripped due to the rains in Vengalrao Nagar, Falaknuma, IDPL, Balanagar and Machabolaram. “The feeders were all repaired within 15 minutes,” an official said.
