Covid death toll crosses 1K mark with 9 new deaths

- KANIZA GARARI | DC

The number of deaths due to Covid-19 crossed the 1,000 mark in Telangana state on September 16, with nine persons dying due to Covid

19, the state health department stated on Thursday.

The state had recorded its first Covid-19 case on March

2, and first fatality due to the disease on March 29. The first 100 cases were recorded on June 4. The toll crossed the 500-mark on July 30, about four months after the first death was registered. From there, it has taken just about

50 days for the toll to double.

The state stands 13th with regard to the number of

Covid-19 deaths in the country.

Many of the deaths were attributed by experts to delayed diagnosis caused by fear of the disease and patients reporting late to hospitals. Many suspected

Covid-19 positive persons are still not willing to get themselves tested when they get the symptoms. Yet others have not understood the symptoms of loss of taste and smell, the initial possible indicators for Covid-19. These issues, apart from the comorbid conditions are the main causes of the deaths.

Controlling death is the main target of the medical fraternity as antiviral drugs are aiding in recovery of patients. But those who come too late often succumb within a few hours in hospitals.

Thirty-eight per cent of patients were symptomatic while 62 per cent were asymptomatic of the 2,000 patients surveyed in the state. From this group, only six per cent required hospitalisation. Fifty-eight per cent exposed to the virus were in the age group of 21 to 50 years.
