Heavy rain forecast till tomorrow

- T.S.S. SIDDHARTH | DC

Heavy rains lashed several parts of the state on Sunday. While tanks and water bodies are brimming due to heavy rains, many roads in the city were inundated, affecting free flow of traffic.

As of 7 pm, the highest amount of rainfall in the state was recorded at the Bhavaninagar Community Hall in Hayatnagar. The area received 79.3 mm of rainfall. According to Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the current spell of rains is due to presence of a low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal. “The system, which formed on Sunday morning, is expected to bring rain all over the state,” an official of the local weather department said.

The IMD has issued a heavy rainfall warning till Tuesday. It said thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are very likely to occur at isolated places over Telangana, including the erstwhile districts of Adilabad, Karimnagar, Nizamabad, Warangal and Khammam.

As a result, officials of the state government said there are chances of flooding and water-logging in low-lying areas.

In light of heavy rainfall in Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits during the last 96 hours, disaster response teams on the field are attending to complaints of fallen trees and clearing stagnant water, apart from dealing with other issues.

In the last four days, civic officials have cleared 203 complaints of water stagnation, tree falls and building or wall collapses.

After September 17 — when five feeders had tripped — no more incidents have been reported, according to officials of the Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TSSPDCL).
