Karimnagar low-lying areas inundated
Several low-lying areas within the Karimnagar Municipal Corporation limits and villages surrounding it have been inundated following heavy rains that lashed the city on Saturday night.
District authorities said rainfall of around 7.1 cm caused large-scale damage to standing paddy, cotton and maize crops, while several water bodies are overflowing with huge inflows because of heavy rains over the district during the last two days. Paddy crop was damaged in Durshed, Mughdampur, Cherlabhutkar and Chamanpalli villages. Cotton and corn crops were damaged partially in Nagunur and Gopalapuram villages.
With drains overflowing, there was water-logging in Bus stand, Kaman Chowrasta,Police Commissionerate, Mukarampura, Housing Board Colony, Mankammathota, Rekurthi and Collectorate areas. Vehicular traffic was disrupted.
People of many colonies in KMC limits faced problems with water entering their houses. Disaster response teams have been striving hard to remove the water. The electricity substation at Bhagatnagar got flooded with water. City mayor Y. Sunil Rao and municipal officials inspected the sub-station and made arrangements for pumping out the water. With forecast of more rains for the coming three days, officials have advised people not to venture out of their houses.
District collector K. Shashanka has ordered officials of departments concerned to remain alert and prevent any untoward incidents. He instructed officials not to leave headquarters but prepare themselves to deal with any unusual situation. He asked them to move people from dilapidated houses to safer places.
