- ANUDEEP CEREMILLA | DC

Two Maoists were reported killed in an encounter with the police in Mangapet mandal of Mulugu district on Sunday.

Police said a special party and Greyhounds forces who were combing the area came across the Maoists at the Musalammagutta forest area. In the shootout that ensued, the two Maoists were killed. Though the police are yet to reveal the identity of the slain naxals, they are suspected to be from a team who had killed TRS leader Bheemeswar Rao in Venkatapuram mandal on October 10.

Confirming that the encounter had taken place, Mulugu superintendent of police Sangramsingh G. Patil said the police had received credible information that the Mao-ists had sent many action teams and forces to areas al-ong the Chhattisgarh state border. They were tasked with creating havoc in TS and were plotting to attack government property, he said.

Damage and losses from Saturday’s heavy rain in areas under the commissionerates of Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Rachakonda was more as the residents were yet to recover from the flood shock of early last week.

On Sunday, Hyderabad police commissioner Anjani Kumar visited flood-affected areas in the south zone. Floodwater reached many places in the Old City like Chandrayangutta, Chaderghat and Falaknuma. Local police rescued those trapped in the floods and evacuated them to safer areas when a six-foot pit fell on Falaknuma bridge.

Police barricaded the area and prevented people going that way. Except for the south and east zones, traffic movement was near normal.

Cyberabad commissioner V.C. Sajjanar, along with Shamshabad DCP N. Prakash Reddy and DCP Traffic S.M. Vijay Kumar, visited old Kurnool bridge and reviewed the traffic situation. Later, he visited Gaganpahad lake, Appa Cheruvu and Palle Cheruvu, which were all filled with water and the backwaters entered the surrounding areas.

Rachakonda commissioner Mahesh Bhagwat constantly monitored the situation and instructed officers to intensify rescue operations in Saroornagar, Ramanthapur. Abdullapurmet, LB Nagar, Vanasthalipuram and Hari Hara Puram Colony.

Many lives were saved as there was immediate response to every SOS. When a couple, both senior citizens, sent a message to the commissioner that they were stranded for three days at VV Nagar, under Saroornagar limits, they were rescued immediately.

In another incident, two people in a van trapped at the Lashkarguga Vagu between Batasingaram and Masjidpur villages sent a message for help.
