GHMC begins evacuation from low-lying areas

With the Met department predicting more rain over the next couple of days, the GHMC has begun evacuating people from low-lying areas as a precaution­ary measure.

During the heavy rains of October 13, about 35,309 families were affected due to floods. With water from the breached Balapur bund of Gurram Cheruvu inundating downstream areas, 2,100 families were evacuated to safer places on Sunday evening.

Giving these details, GHMC commission­er D.S. Lokesh Kumar said 37,409 families were affected by flooding. CM relief kits and three blankets, worth `2,800 in all, were being distribute­d to the affected families.

Till now 20,000 ration kits were distribute­d, and the rest of the families will be covered by Monday.

Milk, bread and biscuits were also being distribute­d. About 90,000 meals during lunch and 60,000 meals at dinner have been distribute­d.

He said the GHMC engineerin­g wing were using 202 pumps and the Disaster Response Force (DRF) 72 pumps to clear water from apartment cellars and inundated colonies.

Additional, zonal and deputy commission­ers are in the field and monitoring relief operations and distributi­ng relief kits to the affected people. Kumar said the GHMC is alerting its personnel and citizens about the situation regularly.
