Double joy for tennis Anand

IPS officer and veteran sportsman C. V. Anand won a grand double at the S. V. Ramayya Memorial Open tennis tournament held at the Lal Bahadur Stadium Tennis Complex in Hyderabad.

Anand defeated Vikas Aswani of Nagpur 9-7 in the final to take the 40+ singles crown. He then teamed up with Waheed to defeat the combinatio­n of Laggani Srinivas and Shivakumar Raju 9-6 in the

40+ doubles title match to collect both trophies in the category.

On way to singles finals, Anand beat top All India Seniors Tennis Associatio­n (AISTA) players like Jaishanker of Pondicherr­y, Satheesan of Chennai and Surender Imam of Tirupati among others.

In the 30+ singles final, Anurag defeated Vijay Anand 2-6, 6-1, 10-6. The two also paired up in the

30+ doubles but went down to Dilip and Raja 1-6, 6-4, 510 in the summit clash.

Organised by the Hyderabad Open Tennis Associatio­n (HOTA) and being the first senior national tournament after the lockdown, a record number of 374 players from all parts of the country participat­ed in the event. The competitio­n was very tough with draws going up to 128 in 40+ and 50+ categories.

■ 40+ doubles: C. V. Anand/ Waheed bt Laggani Srinivas/ Shivakumar Raju 9-6.

■ 50+ singles: Neelkath Damre (Pune) bt NVK Murthi

6-1 6-3.

■ 50+ doubles: Neelkanth Damre/ Narendra Kankaria (Pune) bt Srikant/ C. T. Patil (Mysuru) 6-0, 6-0.

■ 60+ singles: Srinivasul­u Reddy bt Sanyasi Raju (AP)

6-2, 6-3.

■ 60+ doubles: Srinivasul­u Reddy/ Dhanunjayu­lu bt Mehir Prakash/ V Sankar 6-2,

6-1.

■ 70+ doubles: Tahir Ali/ Daval Patel bt KSR Murthi/ Col Parvathees­am 9-1.
