AASU THREATENS TO RESUME ANTI-CAA STIR
The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) here on Tuesday announced to resume anti-CAA movement by staging demonstrations across the state during the proposed visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah to express their resentment against the BJP-led government.
The Prime Minister is scheduled to visit Jerenga Pathar in Upper Assam’s Sivasagar district on January 23, where he is likely to distribute land pattas to over 1 lakh beneficiaries in a public function. He is also slated to address a public rally.
AASU president Dipanka Kumar Nath told reporters that the BJP-led government ignored the Assam Accord by imposing the Citizenship Amendment Act on the people of Assam. “Both the Centre and the state government have no interest in implementing the Clause 6 of the Assam Accord that pledges safeguards for the protection and promotion of Assamese identity and heritage. The BJP-led government at the Centre instead of taking steps to deport illegal foreigners are seeking to provide citizenship to the illegal Bangladeshis in the name of ‘Hindu’ religion,” he said.
Accusing Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal of failing to take steps for implementing the Clause 6 of the Assam Accord, the AASU president said, “They have also not fulfilled their promise to seal the porous border with Bangladesh as yet.”
He announced that the AASU will hold mass torch rallies on January 22 across the state. On January 23, the day Prime Minister is scheduled to visit Jerenga Pathar in Sivasagar, all district and regional units of AASU will wear black badges and stage demonstrations.
