AUSTRALIA’S FIRST LOSS AT GABBA AFTER 1988

-

Australia’s defeat was their first at Brisbane in 32 years. Last time they lost was against the West Indies in 1988. In between these two defeats, Australia went unbeaten for 31 Tests. The only other venue to witness a longer streak is Karachi, where Pakistan remained unbeaten for 34 successive Tests between 1955 and 2000.

India won the four-Test series 2-1 despite losing the first Test match. This is only the fourth instance in which a team has come back from a Test down or worse to beat Australia in Australia. On all the three previous occasions, it was England — in 1882-83, 1911-12 and 1954-55 — who managed that.

PANT SURPASSES DHONI

Rishabh Pant became the 68th Indian batsman to complete 1,000 runs in Test cricket. By completing the same in the 27th innings of 16th Test match, he is the fastest among the seven Indian wicket-keeper to score 1,000 runs in Tests. Mahendra Singh Dhoni who completed 1,000 runs in 32 innings of 20 Test matches, held the previous Indian record.

INDIA’S JOINT 4TH SMALLEST WIN IN TESTS

India recorded their joint fourth smallest win in Tests by beating Australia by three wickets in fourth Test at Brisbane. India’s one-wicket win over Australia at Mohali in 2010-11 is the smallest win followed by two two-wicket victories against Australia at Mumbai in 1964-65 and at Chennai in 2000-01. India also achieved a three-wicket win over the West Indies at Chennai in 1978-79.

■ India’s 329/7 is their third highest fourth innings total to win the match. The highest is 406/4 against the West Indies at Port of Spain in 1975-76. India beat England by six wickets at Chennai in 2008-09 after making 387 which is India’s second highest fourth inning total to win in Tests.

■ This is also the fifth-highest successful chase in Australia. In the last 20 years, only South Africa have chased down a higher total in Australia, when they scored

414 at Perth in 2008.
