COPY CATS!

Why are our stars stealing ‘looks’ from Hollywood actors?

- NIVI SHRIVASTAVA

Agreed it’s been a tough year and it’s tempting to step out looking like a hobo or a character from sci-fi series with masks and COVID-19 paraphernalia. But if you aim to be a trendsetter in Bollywood, stealing looks from Hollywood actors might classify as epic failures.

While Hollywood styles have always been an inspiration for a quick fix, blindly copy-pasting trends to stay relevant might come across too desperate.

From neon bralettes under diaphanous jackets and tops to shredded denims, peek-a-boo cuts on body-hugging Lycra dresses, biker shorts or top-totoe neon tracksuits paired with dad shoes or flip flops — some of our Indian beauties need to desperately rethink their current public looks post the pandemic;

after all, copying looks can never be the new normal.

IN THE PUBLIC EYE

In the age of social media, with almost everyone having access to the latest street looks from trendsetters

such as Kim Kardashian, Gigi and Bella Hadid, it would indeed be a terrible idea for wellknown celebs in the country to copy their style and, worse, to emulate styles that are just not meant for Indian climate and aesthetic as airport and gym looks. Public figures should be prepared at all times for photos, and an ill-prepared look is simply an invitation for trolls and memes online. Nida Sabahat, fashion expert for Affordly, suggests that when choosing a style, one should consider one’s body type. “They should check if the outfit does justice to their overall personality. Secondly, when opting for a risqué outfit, confidence has to be a hundred percent. Many times, you see fashionistas crouching or standing awkwardly with their faces flushed when they are not confident enough. Either be carefree at all times or be extra cautious if you choose to wear a revealing outfit, but before stepping out make sure the ensemble is properly secured and fastened to avoid any mishaps in front of cameras,” Nida adds.

According to me, copying someone’s style is not wrong, but carrying the wrong outfit can make you look disastrous and you will

easily get trolled. For instance, many actors get their hair coloured as the Western celebs do, but they must remember to match it with their skin tone and natural hair shade before experimenting with something extreme colours only because it’s a

popular trend in some foreign countries

Admiring someone’s style and trying to look like them is fine, but copying the right style is important for anyone in the public eye.
