18 mn Indians to find new occupation by 2030: Report

-

Mumbai, Feb. 19:

Covid-19 will have a lasting impact on labour markets, and as much as

18 million Indian workers will be forced to switch to a newer occupation by 2030 because of the pandemic, a report said on Friday.

The impact will be "disproportionately" felt on low-wage workers in retail, food services, hospitality, and office administration, the report by McKinsey Global Institute, said.

The pandemic has disrupted labour markets because companies have been forced to respond to a new dimension of work-physical proximity. The report identifies the lasting impact of Covid19 on labour demand in eight countries.

Three broad changes in consumer behaviour and business models will persist to varying degrees, which include the rise of remote work, the increased embrace of ecommerce and virtual interactions, and the more rapid deployment of automation and artificial intelligence.

This will lead to a reshuffling of jobs in the economy over a decade, and over 100 million workers will have to find a new job, it said, adding

18 million of those will be in India itself.

The impact on India has been minimised because 35-55 per cent of the country's workforce depends on the outdoor production and maintenance arena.

The 21-year-old, son of iconic former captain Sachin Tendulkar, got a major fillip on Thursday when he was bought by Mumbai Indians at his base price of `20 lakh.

His celebrated father hasn’t just played for the franchise but is also the mentor of the side, which is the most successful team in the IPL.

“Since childhood I have always been a die hard fan of Mumbai Indians. I would like to thank the coaches and support staff who showed faith in me.

“I am excited to join the MI Paltan and can’t wait to wear the blue and gold,” Arjun said in a video message posted on MI’s Twitter handle.

Arjun has been a net bowler for the franchise for the past two-three seasons. He recently made his senior Mumbai team debut when he played in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, the national T20 championship, against Haryana. —
