Earlier, actresses who got married were expected to either retire from the movies or move to ‘sister’ or ‘mother’ roles. But such conventions are changing.
Anushka Sharma married Virat Kohli in December 2017. Her Pari and Phillauri, two films which she produced, were released just before the wedding, and did her proud at the box office. Then she did Jab Harry Met Sejal and Zero – starring opposite one of the biggest superstars — Shah Rukh Khan. Now Anushka is already working on a biopic of Jhulan Goswami called Chakdah Express and is producing the second season of Pataal Lok. She’s expected to announce more projects soon.
Deepika Padukone’s Padmaavat released a few months before her marriage to Ranveer Singh and went on to become a `300-crore hit despite them being a couple, and Ranveer playing a negative role in the film. Her next release was the acclaimed Chapaak. Deepika is set to star in director Shakun Batra’s untitled next. The will also be sharing the screen with Siddhant Chaturvedi and Ananya Panday. Deepika will also set screens on fire with director Nag Ashwin’s next opposite the pan-India star Prabhas. A cameo in her husband’s ’83 and the lead in another film produced by Karan Johar. She also has Pathan opposite Shah Rukh Khan and a remake of The Intern coming up.
Kareena Kapoor’s Talaash with Aamir Khan released after her marriage to Saif Ali Khan in 2012. She went on to do films like Satyagraha with Amitabh Bachchan, Singham Returns with Ajay Devgn, Bajrangi Bhaijaan with Salman Khan, Ki and Ka with Arjun Kapoor, Udta Punjab and Veere Di Wedding, Good Newwz with Akshay Kumar and then Angrezi Medium with Irrfan Khan. The
actress has Laal Singh Chaddha with Aamir Khan coming up. She has already gone through other scripts and will be making an announcement soon. “Bebo has been spending her time perusing all the bound scripts that she has got. She liked three and wants to go ahead with them. She has conveyed the same to the makers. She has taken the call to get back on the floor at the earliest, finding a healthy balance between work and family,” shares a source close to the actress.
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s Hollywood film The Last Legion released on April 19, 2007, a day before her wedding to Abhishek Bachchan. She starred with Abhishek in a few films like Sarkar Raj and Raavan, but also
went on to do films like Jodha Akbar and Guzaarish with Hrithik Roshan, Action Replayy with Akshay Kumar and Enthiran alias Robot with Rajinikanth, apart from films like Sarabjit, Fanney Khan and Jazbaa. The actress will now be seen in Mani Ratnam’s film Ponniyin Selvan.
Priyanka Chopra, who had started working in Hollywood before her marriage to Nick Jonas, has had releases such as We Can Be Heroes and The White Tiger in the recent past. She had two releases — The Sky Is Pink and Isn’t It Romantic — before that. She has signed up more films in Hollywood, including the much-awaited Matrix 4. She’s expected to make some more film announcements soon.
Sonam Kapoor too has continued to work after marriage, though she is being rather choosy. She is currently working on Blind for Sujoy Ghosh, while Veere Di Wedding was her first release after her own wedding.
