EXCELLENT SHOW

- PARMOD KUMAR | DC

Congratulations to Team India for the grand success against England (Axardham, DC, Feb. 26). It took nearly 60 years for the talented Axar Patel to break the record of another great Gujarat spinner Jassu Patel whose guile and wizardy in off spin broke the back of the great Australian team of 50s. The real villain of this so-called Test match is the atrocious pitch which helped India grab a 10-wicket win in the third Test match against England. If the pitch starts spinning from the first ball, it is not good for a Test match. Why would the public pay to watch 30 wickets falling inside of two days? It is a disgrace to Test cricket and the BCCI. Phaneendra V.

EARLIER THE court had observed that the petition has raised an ‘important point’ on the flouting of its orders prohibiting rewards to persons who kill wild animals and issued contempt notice.

THE COURT had on February 10, 2021 issued notice that was returnable in two weeks.

NEW DELHI, FEB. 26

The Supreme Court on Friday disposed of a plea seeking initiation of contempt proceedings against senior Maharashtra government officials including principal secretary to Department of Revenue and Forest Vikas Kharge allegedly for announcing reward to the villagers who had killed tigress ‘Avni’ who was described as a “maneater” and was being hunted for killing 13 people in the PandharkawadaRalegaon forests of Yavatmal district in Maharashtra in 2018.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Sharad A. Bobde and also comprising Justice A.S. Bopanna and Justice V. Ramasubramanian, which had earlier issued notice for initiating contempt action against Kharge and eight others, disposed of the matter after the court was informed that it had earlier accepted the killing of the tigress.

Chief Justice Bobde said that a reply by the state government says that a report on tigress Avni was submitted in court and was accepted by it (top court).

“We cannot review the decision. Celebration after death was done by villagers … Villagers were happy and hence they celebrated. Officers have stated on oath that they did not celebrate,” the court said today.

Earlier, the court had on February 10, 2021 issued notice that was returnable in two weeks. The wildlife researcher Sangeeta Dogra had moved the top court seeking initiation of contempt action against Kharge, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest A.K.Mishra, Deputy Conservator of Forest, Pandharkawada district K.M. Abharna and Additional Director General of Project Tiger and member secretary, National Tiger Conservation Authority Anup Nayak allegedly for announcing rewards for the killers of Avni in violation of top court’s directions.

Earlier the court had observed that the petition has raised an “important point” on the flouting of its orders prohibiting rewards to persons who kill wild animals and issued contempt notice.

During the earlier hearing, Dogra had claimed that the forest officials killed Avni on a baseless allegation that she was a maneater responsible for the killing of 13 persons, pointing out that the postmortem report of the tigress showed that she was not a man-eater.

In 2018, the top court had permitted the killing of Avni, officially known as T1, if the attempts to tranquilise her fail. It had further directed that no prize or incentive should be declared for any person responsible for the killing of the tigress.

China’s Huawei plans to make electric vehicles under its own brand and could launch some models this year, four sources said, as the world’s largest telecommunications equipment maker, battered by US sanctions, explores a strategic shift.

Huawei Technologies Co Ltd is in talks with stateowned Changan Automobile and other automakers to use their car plants to make its electric vehicles (EVs), according to two of the people familiar with the matter.

Huawei is also in discussions with Beijing-backed BAIC Group’s BluePark New Energy Technology to manufacture its EVs, said a separate person with direct knowledge of the matter.

The plan heralds a potentially major shift in direction for Huawei after nearly two years of US sanctions that have cut its access to key supply chains, forcing it to sell a part of its smartphone business to keep the brand alive.

Huawei was placed on a trade blacklist by the Trump administration over national security concerns. Many industry executives see little chance that blocks on the sale of billions of dollars of US technology and chips to the Chinese company, which has denied wrongdoing, will be reversed by his successor.

A Huawei spokesman denied the company plans to design EVs or produce Huawei branded vehicles.

“Huawei is not a car manufacturer. However through ICT (information and communications technology), we aim to be a digital car-oriented and new-added components provider, enabling car OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) to build better vehicles.”

Huawei has started internally designing the EVs and approaching suppliers at home, with the aim of officially launching the project as early as this year, the sources said.

Richard Yu, head of Huawei’s consumer business group who led the company to become one of the world’s largest smartphone makers, will shift his focus to EVs, said one source. The EVs will target a mass-market segment, another source said.

All the sources declined to be named as the discussions are private.
