HCA shortlists 210 to pick U-19 squad

- DC CORRESPONDENT HYDERABAD, FEB. 26

With the selection fiasco for the Vijay Hazare Trophy still in the air, administrators at the Hyderabad Cricket Association are taking no chances with the Under 19 squad for the upcoming Vinoo Mankad Trophy.

They have shortlisted 210 players based on the Performance Matrix and will put them through physical fitness tests before slotting them in seven teams for selection matches, in which each player would get at least five games to prove his mettle.

The long list includes 90 batsmen, 37 fast bowlers, 34 allrounders, 15 wicketkeepers, 14 off-spinners, 11 legspinners and 9 left-arm spinners.

“They shall undergo the Physical Fitness Test (Mandatory Compliance) and those who successfully complete the physical fitness assessment will be allowed to play the selection matches,” a press note released on Friday by HCA secretary R. Vijayanand read.

“A total of 7-8 teams will be formed and selection matches would be conducted for all of them. Each player would get a minimum of five matches to prove the skill and performance which will become the very basis of selecting the final team. The designated coaches and selectors would pay keen attention at every stage to monitor the skill and performance in the selection matches thereon,” the release read.

Also, given the discontent that is brewing in cricket circles, a grievance cell has been formed. “We have taken a decision to introduce the Grievance Cell for the first time to pay attention to redress the grievances of players, parents, coaches. Whosoever has a complaint may approach members of the Grievance Cell without any hesitation and prejudice,” the release said. It did not list out members or composition of the Grievance Cell though.
