Experts caution against fancy masks

Use of recommended masks can only contain the upgrading Covid-19 virus

The general public seem to be unaware of the changing behaviour of Coronovirus, thus unable to protect themselves from being infected by the killer microorganism. According to experts, the virus has been upgrading itself, creating confusion among researchers and experts who are on a mission to contain the pandemic. The ways and means to fight the virus are changed as time passes by, but it seems people are not upgraded about the precautions to be taken.

The second wave of the pandemic has been more virulent and social distancing, sanitisation and using face mask do not seem to be sufficient to put the menace in check. Unfortunately, the use of masks often goes fruitless as people are not wearing recommended masks. As virus turns to be airborne during the second wave, experts advise the public to use double masks instead of just one.

Experts also advise not to use fancy masks or cloth masks as they cannot serve the purpose. As most of those affected by the virus are asymptomatic or having mild symptoms, proper masking only can contain the virus spread to a larger extinct, they say.

Retired professor Dr S.R. Sukumar, says, “People have to be upgraded as the virus is upgrading. The virus which was earlier on surface now has moved to air. Because of multiple mutations, the medical journals say, it is highly recommended to put on a pre-screened mask. Two masks are preferable for extra protection.”

Dr Sukumar, who also runs a private clinic, adds, “There are many patients who are asymptomatic and having mild symptoms. After their test report, they are asked to isolate themselves, but I find them at vegetable markets and groceries shops. They will be spreading the disease all around, hence proper masking will only give proper protection.”

Dr M Naresh, Senior Resident, Pulmonology, Government Chest Hospital, says, “There were thorough discussions with many experts, and according to their recommendations, at places where the virus spread is expected to be more, including hospitals, diagnostic labs or health centres, N95 masks are must, that too those FFP3 or

FFP2 approved which are of European standards.

K95 can also be used.” ‘Three ply’ mask, which has three layers is another option as the inside layers are absorbent. When you cough or sneeze, it absorbs wet particles. Its outer layer is water resistant, this three ply mask should have a nose clip,” he says, adding that two ply surgical masks are also efficient to control the infection.
