Congress is set to win the by-elections to the Damoh Assembly constituen­cy in Madhya Pradesh with the party maintainin­g a decisive lead over its nearest BJP rival.

The party has maintained an unassailab­le lead of 15,717 votes after the 19th round of counting of votes.

Counting of the remaining seven rounds was in progress till the reports reached here.

Congress’ Ajey Tondon is locked in a multi-cornered contest with BJP’s Rahul Singh Lodhi in the by-elections.

April 17, necessitat­ed following resignatio­n of Lodhi from Assembly as well as Congress a couple of months ago.

He, later, joined BJP and was re-nominated as candidate by the party in the by-elections.

With the victory, the strength of Congress has increased to 96 in the 230member MP Assembly. The ruling BJP has a strength of 126.

Chouhan in the wake of defeat of ruling BJP candidate Rahul Singh Lodhi at the hand of Congress nominee Ajey Tondon in the April 17 by-elections to Damoh Assembly seat, results of which were declared on Sunday.

“Chouhan should step down owning moral responsibi­lity for the defeat of BJP candidate in the by-elections to the Damoh Assembly seat”, Congress spokesman here Narendra Singh Saluja said.

Jaipur, May 2: BJP’s Deepti Maheshwari has won the bypolls to the Rajsamand Assembly seat, while the Congress is leading in the by-elections to the Sahada and Sujangarh constituen­cies in Rajasthan, according to Election Commission figures.

Over 60.37 per cent voters had exercised their franchise in the April 17 byelection­s to the Rajsamand, Sujangarh and Sahada Assembly seats.

Maheshwari defeated Tansukh Bohara from the Congress by 5,310 votes.

In the Sahada and the Sujangarh seats, Congress candidates Gayatri Devi and Manoj Kumar are leading by 19,985 and 16,104 votes, it said.
