A helping hand from Sadhu Vaswani Mission during Covid

- SANJAY SAMUEL PAUL | DC

For the past 20 years, a team from the Sadhu Vaswani Mission, led by Heera Rupani, has never missed out on the twice-aweek distribution of lunch boxes to patientattendants at the Niloufer Hospital. But when Covid-19 hit people hard, things changed.

“Many people are now losing their livelihood. What began in March last year is still continuing and any little help we provide makes a lot of difference to the present plight of the people,” says Heera Rupani.

When the nationwide lockdown pushed many into deep poverty, the Mission took up distribution of dry rations to families. When the floods came last year, the helping hands from the Mission reached out to the victims with not just rations but also utensils. Several orphanages were also covered under the relief effort.

Heera Rupani, trustee and secretary of Sadhu Vaswani Mission, has been helping people in Rasoolpura, Kompally, Nimboliyadda and two orphanages. “We have also provided people with face masks, face shields, PPE kits,” she said.

She added, “Since October last, we have been distributing dry rations, utensils and hygiene kits to more than a thousand families every month. Each kit has items worth around `5,000. We are also providing undergarments to the poor in Rasoolpura, Kompally, and Nimboliyadda.”

Each grocery kit the Mission provides comprises 10kg of rice, 5kg wheat, 2kg cooking oil, 1kg sugar, tea powder, chilli powder, turmeric and salt.
