Silent, selfless service is their motto

- ATHER MOIN I DC

Theirs is a story of utmost compassion. At a time when people keep aloof from the rest of the society for fear of catching Covid19, a group of young humanitarians is pulling out all the stops to extend help to the ailing poor, notwithstanding their own constraints. They are reaching out to patients — both Covid and non-Covid — who do not have anyone to care for.

What started as individual charity brought five youngsters together to form a group and work as a collective to take care of the needy. Silently, yet swiftly, these five good Samaritans — Mirza Mujahid Baig, Dawood Junaidi, Syed Bilal, Shaikh Sohail and Sayeed Ghouri — are turning to be gods in disguise for several people on the breadline.

Mirza and his friends spend hours together serving Covid-19 patients, and those suffering from other ailments, bearing all the costs by themselves.

Mujahid Baig said they had been helping people for the past one year. There was a bit of a break when cases fell but the second wave of Covid-19 made them resume their services with more vigour.

“It does not matter whether it is day or night. This time round, we are helping patients in urgent need, get oxygen cylinders free of cost, and also helping patients find beds in hospitals,” he said.

The members of this group administer supplemental oxygen therapy to Covid-19 patients at homes, give medicines as advised by doctors and change even diapers of elderly patients. He said people were so scared of the pandemic that even close

relatives maintain distance and avoid helping those in need. “We are trying

to show that there need not be any fear, and teaching people how they can

take care of their near and dear ones, while being safe,” he said.
