The fingerprints on a helmet left behind at the crime scene helped the Cyberabad police arrest the two men involved in the Kukatpally ATM murder-robbery case that took place last month.

The special operations team along with the Kukatpally police arrested two boys — aged 21 and 23, and both natives of Bihar — on Tuesday and recovered `6.31 lakh from them as also a country made pistol, a magazine and live rounds.

“Prime accused Ajeet Kumar was involved in a series of burglaries, robberies and theft in and around Cyberabad. He and associate Mukesh Kumar, 21, had opened fire on the employees of Writer Safeguard, Ali Baig and Srinivas, on April 29,” said police commissioner of Cyberabad, V.C. Sajjanar Baig had succumbed to his injuries on the spot and Srinivas survived with injuries.

“Ajeet Kumar came to Hyderabad in 2011 in search of work and was an alcoholic. He started committing robberies in 2018 and was arrested by the Dundigal Police. After returning to Bihar in 2018 on bail, he came back to Hyderabad in 2020 and worked for about eight months before he started committing offences. In March 2021, he transferred money to his friend in Bihar to buy a countrymade pistol and come to the city along with five live rounds,” said the commissioner.

The two did a series of robberies and bike thefts. On April 29, the two pursued an ATM cash van from Erragadda circle till KPHB, attacked the guards and fled with `5 lakh in cash.

“In the commotion, Ajeet dropped his helmet at the ATM and fled. After the attack, the two went to Medchal on a stolen bike via Miyapur-BachupallyKajipally ORR service road and left the vehicle at a temple in Medchal. They walked till their rented place and stayed there for a few days to avoid cAs. Ajeet was previously arrested by the Dundigal police, his fingerprints lifted from the helmet at the crime scene provided sufficient hints to the cops.”
