IMD warns of gusty winds

The very severe cyclone Yaas, which ravaged parts of West Bengal and Odisha, has made an appearance over the state as well, say weather observers.

While the impact was not as damaging, the state, including Hyderabad, experienced strong gusts of wind blowing over it. The winds were such that the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a strong-wind warning for the state from Friday to Sunday.

It states, “Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning and gusty winds (30-40 KMPH) are very likely to occur at isolated places in all districts of Telangana.”

Meanwhile, IMD meteorologist A Sravani told

Deccan Chronicle, “We expect that there would be dry conditions over the state. Whenever there is a cyclonic circulation, the moisture from the landmass is absorbed, leaving a vacant space for the winds to blow at high speeds.”

In what can be considered a double-whammy, with the moisture or relative humidity siphoned away, the state might be in for hotter days from Thursday, cautioned IMD officials. This moisture, they said, acts as a barrier which absorbs some of the heat before letting it reach the earth’s surface.

Concurring with IMD, independent weather observers like Rajanikanth Poolla said that the city had been facing wind, which was travelling at speeds of 20 knots (37.04 kmph). “The winds did not last for a long time, but were intense whenever they blew,” he said. Denizens from the city also took to twitter to share their experiences of the wind.

‘Effects of #CycloneYaas being felt in Hyderabad just this minute as winds pick up and the sky is overcast. Must be one crazy powerful cyclone for its effects to impact us here while it moves on an eastward trajectory. Stay safe #orissa and #bengal.’ (sic) said one Bratman on twitter.
