“Our artworks showcase the human–animal conflict and the need for wildlife to be protected in mangroves. The main role of tigers in the ecosystem is to keep in control the population of ungulates so that the biodiversity of that region thrives”

To acquire the ultimate goal of a ‘green and clean planet’, we have to protect the biodiversity of every ecosystem in the planet. Artists Nayan Shrimali and Vaishali Chudasama voice out their concerns on the matter with their latest artworks.

The artists depict the vivid flora and fauna of Mumbai’s Mangroves and the illustrations of the Bengal tiger. “Biodiversity refers to every living thing, including plants, bacteria, animals and humans while monoculture is its antonym,” the artists tell us.

The duo spells out that monoculture in agriculture — which began with the idea of fulfilling the needs of a growing population and expanded exponentially, creating what we now know as climate change or global warming — is especially a major factor that led to this critical imbalance in our ecosystem.

“Our artworks showcase the human-animal conflict and the need for wildlife to be protected in mangroves,” share the artists, who also made something for World Tiger Day to raise awareness about tigers as apex predators on top of the food chain. “The main role of tigers in the ecosystem is to keep in control the population of ungulates so that the biodiversity of that region thrives.”
