Alumni take up fight to save BVB Vidyashram

- HARLEEN MINOCHA | DC

At least 3,000 alumni of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan’s Vidyashram School in Rajendranagar area of the city are leading a campaign across the country to save the institution from closure. They are making all out efforts to ensure that National Institute of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj (NIRD PR) extends the lease of land on which the school stands by another 30 years.

Though the lease had expired in April 2021, NIRD has extended it until April 2022 on condition that the school will relocate to another place by then. Vidya Babu, a Vidyasharam 1999 batch alumni, along with several others, have written to the PMO and Vice President pleading that the legacy of generations’-old school is not disturbed. They say this will be possible only if the land is leased out for another 30 years at least.

“Closure or change of school’s location will adversely affect the relationship between students and teachers. This will harm not only the students’ personal lives, but cause irrevocable emotional damage to all alumni associated with the institution since years,” Vidya Babu observed.

Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in Rajendranagar currently has 1,400 students, apart from 50 teachers.

The campaign by the alumni has been garnering support with several politicians of the state, like Himachal Pradesh governor Bandaru Dattatreya and former Chevella MP Konda Vishweshwar Reddy writing to the central government for extension of the lease.
