Groundwate­r level in Telangana rising

A net rise in groundwate­r level of 2.09m was observed during May this year in Telangana as compared to the same month last year. This was observed in 30 districts and a fall in the three other districts, a report released by the Ground Water Department on Wednesday said. The department said it monitored water levels through

1062 piezometer­s (monitoring stations) across Telangana.

A minimum rise of 0.03m was observed in Adilabad district and maximum rise of 6.86m in Medak district. A minimum fall of 0.01m was observed in Bhupalapal­ly and maximum fall of —1.77m in Nizamabad district, it said.

A net average fall of 0.17m in groundwate­r levels was observed during May 2021 compared to the previous month and a rise was observed in eight districts

(0.09m Nirmal to 1.39m in Adilabad) while a fall was observed in the remaining

25 districts.

Average groundwate­r level in the state during May 2021 was 9.19 meters below ground level (m bgl) and it varied from 4.11m bgl (Wanaparthy) to 15.86m bgl (Medak). The average water level was less than 5m bgl in

22 districts, which was between five and 1om bgl. In the remaining districts, it was above 10m bgl, the department said.

Shallow water levels (less than 5m bgl) were noticed in

15 per cent of the state’s areas, covering most of Jagtial, Warangal(Rural & Urban), western part of Asifabad, western and central part of Mancherial, central eastern part of Nirmal, eastern part of Karimnagar, south central and eastern part of Mahabubaba­d, central and western part of Khammam, central part of Suryapet, Wanaparthy, south and central part of Nagarkurno­ol, central & eastern part of Nalgonda district and north eastern part of Gadwal.

Water levels in the range of

5-10m bgl occupied 53 per cent of the state’s area, followed by 10-15m bgl water levels which covered 23 per cent of the state’s area during the month.

Moderately deep (15-20m bgl) and very deep-water levels (more than20m bgl) occupied seven per cent and two per cent of the state area respective­ly and these are mostly covering the central and western part of Adilabad, central part of Nirmal and eastern part of Nizamabad, eastern part of Sangareddy, southern part of Medak, north-western part of Bhupalapal­ly, southern part of Siddipet, southeaste­rn part of Bhadradri, and central part of Kamareddy district.

Water levels during this May was compared with the decadal average of previous May month (2011-2020) levels. It was observed that, out of 589 mandals, a rise in the range of 0.01-15.05m was observed in 546 (93 per cent) mandals and a fall in the range 0.03- 6.54 m in 43 (7 per cent) mandals.

The rise (compared to decadal average of May 20112020 up to 0.5m was observed in 24 mandals, 0.5-1.0m in 29 mandals, 1-2m in 57 mandals and more than 2m in 436 mandals falling in the south western part of Nirmal, southern part of Adilabad, Jagitial, Sircilla, Warangal(U), Warangal(R) Karimnagar, Siddipet, Suryapet, eastern and western and eastern part of Medak, Jangoan, parts of Kamareddy, Yadadri, Hyderabad, Mahabubnag­ar, south western part of Bhupalpall­y, western and south eastern part of Bhadradri, Rangareddy, Medchal, western part of Khammam, central part of Jogulamba, Vikarabad,

Nagarkurno­ol, Narayanpet, Nalgonda and Wanaparthy districts etc.
