TN, Maha to take call on exams soon

The Tamil Nadu government will make known its decision on holding the plus two board exam in the state in two days’ time, after conferring with experts, state school education minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi said.

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin will take the final call on the issue after the views of education and medical experts and teachers among others were elicited, besides considerin­g the stand of other states in this pandemic times, he said.

“Children’s health and safety is equally important as their future, as our Chief Minister had said. Echoing this view, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced cancellati­on of the CBSE exam on Tuesday,” the minister said on Wednesday.

Addressing reporters here after attending a meeting with Stalin, Poyyamozhi said during a meeting convened by Union defence minister Rajnath Singh earlier, several states opined that the board exam could be conducted with precaution­ary measures in place.

Maharashtr­a school education minister Varsha Gaikwad on Wednesday said a proposal has been sent to the disaster management authority regarding the state board exams for Class 12 students and a decision on the issue will be taken in a couple of days.

She said the issue was discussed at a meeting of the state cabinet here, a day after the Centre cancelled the CBSE Class 12 board exams citing the prevailing Covid-19 pandemic. Amid the pandemic which has hit Maharashtr­a hard, Gaikwad said, students' health remains the top priority for the state government.

Karnataka primary and secondary education minister Suresh Kumar on Wednesday said an appropriat­e decision will be taken soon on holding board exams in the state. “Regarding holding SSLC (class 10) and second year Pre-University (class 12) exams, an appropriat­e decision will be taken at the earliest,” the minister said in a statement.

He said discussion­s are underway with teachers, education experts and parents in this regard and an appropriat­e decision will be taken soon keeping in mind the health of the children and their future.

The Goa government will go through decisions taken by other states and also consult the Union education ministry before taking a call on Class 12 Goa board exams, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said. Notably, the Centre on Tuesday cancelled the CBSE Class 12 board exams in view of the Covid-19 situation.

Chhattisga­rh government, however, on Tuesday set in the process of holding the “exam from home” for the class 12 board examinatio­ns in the state. The students have been asked to collect their question papers and blank answers from the designated Centres ‘in person’ from June 1 to June 5 and submit their answer papers within five days of receiving the question and blank answer papers.
