BHOOPAL REDDY PROTEM COUNCIL CHAIRMAN

Senior TRS MLC V. Bhoopal Reddy has been appointed Protem Chairman of the Telangana Legislative Council until a new chairman is elected. Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan issued a notification to this effect on Thursday.

This is for the first time in the history of the Legislative Council that a Protem Chairman was appointed since it was restored in March 2007 in Undivided AP and since it was bifurcated to form the TS Legislative Council in June 2014.

The appointment of a Protem Chairman was necessitated as both incumbent Chairman Gutha Sukender Reddy and Deputy Chairman Nethi Vidyasagar retired on Thursday. Normally, the Deputy Chairman acts as the Chair if the Chairman retires, until a new Chairman is elected. But that is not t be in this case.

An MLC vacancy under the Governor quota will arise on June 16, when incumbent MLC Madireddy Srinivas Reddy’s term will end. The Election Commission of India had recently deferred elections to six MLC seats under MLA's quota but left out the Governor quota.

Following this, the CM has reportedly decided to convene a Cabinet meeting to approve nomination of Sukender Reddy as MLC under the Governor quota and bring him back as Chairman.
