Mumbai: Political strategist Prashant Kishor on Friday

met NCP chief Sharad Pawar here. Though the NCP said the meeting was a thanksgiving trip related to the Bengal and Tamil Nadu election, there are speculations that non-Congress parties are trying to put up a joint fight against the BJP and leader against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Well-known political strategist Prashant Kishor on Friday met Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar at the latter’s residence Silver Oak in South Mumbai. Though the NCP maintained that the meeting was a thanksgiving trip related to the Bengal and Tamil Nadu election, there are speculations that non-Congress opposition parties are trying to put up a joint fight against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and credible leader against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Shiv Sena has been openly proposing Pawar as the opposition leader.

Kishor held talks with the NCP chief and party leaders for three and half hours. The meeting between Pawar and Kishor assumes ‘political significance’ as it is believed the NCP chief wants a united forum of Opposition parties to take on the ruling BJP in the next Lok Sabha election, which is scheduled in 2024.

A senior NCP leader, requesting anonymity, said that Kishor had apprised the NCP chief about the current political situation with the facts and figures.

He also gave a suggestion on how to unite the opposition parties in the country. Apart from the NCP chief, the meeting was also attended by Baramati MP Supriya Sule, Maharashtra NCP president Jayant Patil and MLA Rohit Pawar.

Speaking with this newspaper on Friday, Maharashtra Cabinet minister and NCP national spokesperson Nawab Malik said that the current political situation in the country was discussed in the meeting.

THE MEETING between Pawar and Kishor assumes ‘political significance’ as it is believed the NCP chief wants a united forum of Opposition parties to take on the ruling BJP in the next Lok Sabha election, which is scheduled in 2024.

THE SHIV Sena has been openly proposing Pawar as the opposition leader.

“A discussion was held over the political situation in the country and how to unite the opposition parties against the BJP in the country,” Malik added.

Senior NCP leader and Cabinet minister Chhagan Bhujbal said that Prashant Kishor, who is a successful election strategist, has helped various parties win the elections at the centre and states with his suggestion and strategies.

“But I don’t know the exact reason behind the meeting but if he comes with a suggestion, Pawar will certainly consider it,” he added.

Shiv Sena spokesperson Arvind Sawant welcomed the meeting and said, “At present, polarisation is needed in the country. If democracy needs to be preserved, a strong opposition is needed.”

In March 2021, the Sena had said that there is a need to restructure the UPA, and the new alliance should be led by a senior leader like Sharad Pawar as many regional parties are not ready to work under the leadership of the Congress. According to the Sena, if UPA is restructured, more parties will join the alliance.
