MacKenzie Scott announces new philanthropy gifts of $2.7 billion
The ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, and one who’s considered one of the world’s wealthiest women, Scott announced on Tuesday a new round of large charitable donations totalling $2.7 billion for educational, community and other non-profit organisations.
Scott had pledged to give away the bulk of her fortune from her divorce settlement with Bezos. She made the announcement in her blog post saying she’d be donating the money to “286 high-impact organisations in categories and communities that have been historically underfunded and overlooked.” The announcement marked
the third round of big donations from Scott, whose fortune is estimated at $59 billion. She had previously given close to $6 billion to hundreds of groups and institutions.
Scott, who said the effort is motivated by a desire to address growing inequalities, has avoided the idea of creating a foundation. Instead, she relies on a team of advisers who help her identify grantees. “People struggling against inequities deserve center stage in stories about change they are creating (sic),” Scott wrote on the website Medium, adding that she and her team were all attempting to give away a fortune that was enabled by systems in need of change. “In
this effort, we are governed by a humbling belief that it would be better if disproportionate wealth were not concentrated in a small number of hands, and that the solutions are best designed and implemented
by others,” she added. The unrestricted grants will go to a wide range of organisations in education, the arts, social action, child advocacy and other causes.
