WOMAN DELIVERS BABY IN RAIN NEAR SWOLLEN STREAM

- PILLALAMARRI SRINIVAS | DC

In a heartrending incident, a pregnant woman gave birth to a baby on the banks of a swollen stream, in heavy downpour, thus proving the grit of a mother who can withstand any adverse condition for her child.

The woman, Yellavva of Dattojipet, gave birth to the baby on the banks of the stream on her way to the hospital as the stream was overflowing following incessant rains near Gangapur village in Kadam mandal in Nirmal district on Wednesday. Both the mother and the baby survived despite the bad weather and heavy rains. It is learnt that mother and the new-born baby are safe and were later shifted to a government hospital after the floodwater had receded.

Streams and rivulets have been overflowing following heavy rains and the roads have been badly damaged in the village. Villagers arranged a vehicle and dragged it using a tractor across the stream and shifted the mother and the baby to hospital.

On the other hand, irrigation projects have received heavy inflows following rains in the upstream. It has been raining for the last 24 hours in the old Adilabad district with brief breaks. Rainwater entered into the low-lying areas and inundated standing crops and damaged cotton, red gram and soya plants. Water is overflowing in full force, inundating low-lying bridges including Mahagam in Narnoor mandal.

Villagers say that high level bridges on streams and rivulets for the free flow of vehicles are the only solution for free movement even during the rainy season in low-lying areas. The officials may release water downstream from the irrigation projects with the heavy flood water inflows from upstream into Kadam irrigation project.
