‘Shave it off’ seems to be the in thing after the pandemic for everyone looking for a ‘fresh start’

L“NO I DON’T HAVE CANCER ( I PRAY I DON’T HAVE IT EVER), NO I DON’T DO DRUGS, I DON’T SMOKE WEED/HASH, NO I HAVE NEVER VISITED A REHABILITATION CENTER. IT’S MY HEAD AND MY HAIR SO I CAN AND WILL DO WHATEVER THE HELL I WANT WITH IT. ALL QUESTIONS ANSWERED ?! NOW CHILL (SIC),” WROTE SWASTIKA IN CAPTION

ast week, when Iris Law walked the Cannes red carpet with a bleached-blonde buzz cut, it generated a buzz that marked the comeback of the super cool buzz cut — a refreshing and one of the boldest beauty moves ever.

The buzz cut debuted last year when Graveyard singer Halsey said sayonara to her long hair with the cut by shaving her head. The 25-year-old singer had been hinting about her new look on Twitter. ‘I was growing it out for so long and I told myself I wouldn’t

shave it till I saw what it was like healthy and long and then I saw it healthy and long and said ‘mm this is nice but I miss bald.”

and then so I did it! [sic]’

From the likes of Demi Moore and Jada Pinkett Smith to Natalie Portman, many Hollywood celebrities have tried and embraced the new look. In fact, V for Vendetta actress Natalie Portman went all out and supported a buzz cut.

HOME AND HISTORIC TRUTHS

And as surely as experts estimated the trend to catch up back home, Bollywood actors Arjun Kapoor and Ranveer Singh and cricketers MS Dhoni and Hardik Pandya have never hesitated to chop their long locks off, having experimented with the buzz cut on many occasions recently.

Model Priya Singh also sported the buzz cut and posted pictures on her Instagram. Even more recently, Detective Byomkesh Bakshy actress Swastika Mukherjee shared pictures of her new hairdo on her social media page, after shaving the hair off a part of her head. “No I don’t have cancer ( I pray I don’t have it ever), No I don’t do drugs, I don’t smoke weed/hash, No I have never visited a rehabilitation Center. It’s my head and my hair so I can and will do whatever the hell I want with it. All questions answered ?! Now chill (sic),” wrote Swastika in caption.

Perhaps it wouldn’t be wrong to say buzz cut has become synonymous with new beginnings.

Suhas Shinde, celebrity hairstylist agrees that this style has become the new post-pandemic haircut ruling the red carpets. However, he also lets us in on a secret about the buzz cut, which he calls a ‘historic cut’. “Often called the men’s haircut, this was quite popular among the army and police officials. However, in the 1980s, it became a street style with everyone donning the look

blending it with their aesthetics. The official

look was no longer official but a fun one, enhancing people’s individuality,” explains Suhas.

The hairstylist also points out that as time passed, tons of elements have been associated with buzz cuts. “There are various changes in the styling structure, which gives you space to experiment based on your facial features and face style,” he adds.

EXPRESSIONS AND EASE OF MAINTENANCE

As bold as the style might look, the buzz cut is refreshing, sharp and crisp. It also makes a statement of embracing freedom and change like never before.

Suhas Shinde also talks about how like Demi Moore and Iris Law, even Tallulah Willis had shaved off their head. “Many of us have done that during the lockdown — experimented with our looks because this was the best time to try a look we wouldn’t dare otherwise,” he shares with a chuckle. For stylist Lucas Chinappa, the pandemic brought back the buzz cut in style. “Both men and women can easily maintain it. You can enhance it with a slight alteration as per your face-type. You can easily give a different style if you combine a buzz with side fades,” adds Lucas, who believes that Buzz cut is here to stay and never goes out of fashion. “Buzz can also be enhanced by creating a sharp buzz line on your sides and at the nape of your neck. Men can also create a dapper look by detailing their beards with a flamboyant buzz cut.” However, Lucas also shares a word of caution. “The buzz cut and styles don’t work for all face shapes,” he says. “If you have a strong jawline, good cheekbones and a lean face, you would be a killer to sport the buzz cut. Those with a big forehead can alter the sides promptly to keep the focus away from the forehead.”

Buzz cut has been an iconic thing for ages and it’s just making a comeback because finally we are changing the dynamics of our relationship with our hair. Who wouldn’t love to just have a haircut that’s as easy as air and doesn’t require you to carry tons of products with you? — SUHAS SHINDE,
