Guv. calls for end to human trafficking

- DC CORRESPONDENT

On the occasion of United Nations World Day against human trafficking, Governor Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan on Friday gave a call to end the heinous crime.

The Governor was speaking after releasing a set of five handbooks on ‘Countering Human Trafficking’, brought by an NGO with support from the US Consulate General, at Raj Bhavan.

These handbooks will be used to train and empower district-level law enforcement and prosecution agencies across Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha so that they could be more effective in countering Trafficking in Persons (TIP).

Soundararajan said that human trafficking is the third largest organized crime in the world after drugs and illegal arms trade.

“Trafficking in persons is an extreme form of human rights violation and results in exploitation and perpetration of crime against the innocent people. Female victims continue to be the primary target of trafficking, as women constitute 46 per cent and girls constitute 19 per cent of the total trafficking victims,” she said.

The Governor stated that once the proposed draft of “Trafficking in Persons (Prevention, Care, and Rehabilitation) Bill-2021, is approved and becomes a reality then its effective implementation could help prevent trafficking to considerable extent. She said rescued victims should not be stigmatised.

US Consulate General Hyderabad, Clark Ledger said “All of us - governments, law enforcement, civil society and individual citizens - must combine our energy, knowledge, and resources to prevent trafficking.”

He added that the US Embassy and consulates have built partnerships with organizations in India that are actively engaged in anti-trafficking initiatives.
