Patriotic B’wood songs tune in I-Day
People gather at colonies, public places to hoist Tricolour; varsities hold celebrations on campuses
Street corners, residential colonies, government and public sector offices and educational institutions came alive on Sunday as people in the city celebrated the 75th Independence Day.
While the hoisting of the Tricolour was the main event of the day, patriotic songs from Bollywood movies of yore wafted in the air as people joined in the festivities from their homes and public places.
The celebrations were held at the Arts College in Osmania University campus and these were led by vice-chancellor Prof Ravinder. At the neighbouring English and Foreign Languages University, EFLU vicechancellor Prof E. Suresh Kumar hoisted the national flag.
At the SBI regional office, the bank’s chief general manager of Hyderabad Circle Smit Jhingran hoisted the Tricolour.
Mayor Vijayalakshmi led the celebrations at the GHMC headquarters. She said GHMC workers ensured that the civic body was at the forefront of providing citizen-centric services.
A special felicitation ceremony was organised for paracyclists at which artificial limbs, sponsorships and scholarships were given to para-athletes who won medals last year.
Celebrations were also held at South Central Railway headquarters where the SCR general manager Gajanan Mallya unfurled the national flag.
At University of Hyderabad, vice chancellor BJ Rao hoisted the National Flag and congratulated the university fraternity and paid tributes to the leaders who made independence possible for the country. “I believe we have the potential to make our university the best, not only in India, but also among the very best globally. Not trying for it or not getting there is not an option for us,” Prof. Rao said.
At the Amara Veerula Sainik Smarak at the Parade Grounds in Secunderabad, senior officers from the Army, Air Force, and Navy laid honoured martyrs.
