PARTITION DAY

-

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to observe August 14 as ‘Partition Horrors Remembrance Day’ spreads negativity and hate (Aug. 14 Partition Horrors Day: PM, DC, Aug. 15). It is unbecoming of the Head of State to criticise past events instead of improving the present.

This is a ploy to divert people’s attention from pressing domestic issues.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is known to invoke sentiments whenever he feels the Opposition is getting stronger and his government’s failures are getting exposed , especially before elections. So his terming the partition as “horror” is not a surprise. Narendra Modi must realise that people are least bothered about the history and are only interested in the present issues related to unemployment, price rise and pandemic. Further, has he forgotten horrors of Gujarat killings, Babri Masjid demolition, demonetisation and so on? Kshirasagara Balaji Rao

Over 70 years, India has achieved a lot more than many developing countries including our neighbour Pakistan. Thanks to foresight of leaders then, we maintained status quo and followed a democratic secular form of government. It’s time to demand the present government looks forward rather than look back and blame those who are not alive. If government fails to understand the reality and attempts to go for a soft Pakistan model of using religion, it will ruin what has been achieved so far. N. Nagarajan
