How to use the condom

According to the expert, it’s important to use condom in the right way to prevent failures

Statistics released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare show that the usage of condom is low, especially in southern states. The failure rate of condoms was cited as one of the reasons for low usage.

Why and how do condoms fail?

In general, the failure of condoms is due to either improper usage or manufacturing defects. There may be tiny holes in condoms despite the pieces being electronically tested. Semen is expelled at a speed of 40-90 kilometres per hour. Such high speeds exert increased pressure in the pouch at the tip of the condom meant for collection of ejaculated semen. If this pouch is air-locked, the additional pressure will make the tip burst, allowing the semen to seep into the vagina.

TO MINIMISE FAILURES:

● Unroll about an inch of the condom and squeeze its tip between the thumb and forefinger to clear the pouch of air, and prevent the condom from bursting.

● Take care to ensure that the fine sheath is not torn by fingernails.

● Do not use vaseline or other grease for lubrication.

● After the orgasm and before the erection slackens, withdraw the penis from the vagina, holding the rim of the condom close to the penis so as to prevent accidental semen seepage.

Some men have a problem maintaining the erection when they try to use a condom. For the sustenance of an erection, there should be continuous stimulation. When foreplay is halted for the man to put on the condom, he is temporarily deprived of stimulation and he could be distracted too, resulting in him losing the erection. To prevent this, the act of wearing a condom can be incorporated into the foreplay. The wife can put it on her husband, thus giving him uninterrupted tactile stimulation.
