All is not well in Punjab Congress

Party in-charge Rawat comments before leaving

- DC CORRESPONDENT NEW DELHI, SEPT. 2

The problems of Congress in Punjab refuse to go away. In the latest round, general secretary incharge of Punjab Harish Rawat said that not all is well within the party in the state.

This comment was made in the context of the on-going tussle between the camp of Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh and that of state unit chief Navjot Singh Sidhu.

Rawat had been camping in Chandigarh in a bid to douse fire between the rival camps. Before leaving, he said, “Not all is well in Congress. I don’t want to hide from you. Those angry ministers who did not come to meet me, I thank them. The government did some things very well which we could not appreciate. It is due to the Amarinder Singh government that the Bargari case is out of the clutches of the CBI.”

Rawat wanted to hold a meeting between the Chief Minister and the state unit chief in his presence. However, the meeting could not take place as the state unit chief Sidhu left for New Delhi.

Sources say that he went to meet the Congress high command but no meeting took place.

Last month some ministers in Punjab government had openly come out against the Chief Minister and demanded a replacement.

They had also met Harish Rawat in Dehradun only to be politely inform that upcoming Assembly elections will be fought under the leadership of Chief Minister Captain

Amarinder Singh.

Soon after this the Chief Minister organised a dinner for MLAs in which 55 MLAs were present to show support to the Chief Minister.

Last month the Congress high command appointed Navjot Singh Sidhu against the advice of Captain Amarinder Singh as the Congress state unit chief.

Sidhu had opened a front against the Congress government in the state by openly speaking against the government.

After his appointment as the state unit chief the trend still continues on social media and other

platforms.

He has openly snubbed the general secretary incharge by saying that if he is not given a free hand in the scheme of things then there can be problems.

Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh has already met the Congress president Sonia Gandhi against open outbursts of Sidhu against his own government.

He has impressed upon her that this will further deteriorate the relations between the party and the government and will have serious repercussions for the party in the upcoming polls.
