Mask up even after 2 jabs for full protection: Docs

- DC CORRESPONDENT

Increasing risk of infections are noticed among those who were vaccinated against Covid-19, as the nasal region from where the virus enters the human body does not have sufficient protection. Vaccination is not a full guarantee against Covid19.

Due to high transmissibility of delta variants, those who do not wear masks properly or are not wearing masks at all when they get out of homes are at risk. Hospitals are recording such cases, and these are called break- through infections.

Dr Srinivas Rao, director of health, said breakthrough infections are mild to moderate in intensity among vaccinated people. Vaccination helps prevent complications and death due to the infection, he stressed. Said Dr Ramana Prasad, senior pulmonologist at Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences Hospital: “Fully vaccinated people are less careful in using masks and ensuring social distancing. Vaccination does not prevent corona infection. They require home quarantine and isolation. Those who have persistent fever for more than five days are being treated with antibody cocktail, remdesivir with steroids and they would require oxygen support.”

Breakthrough infections reported in hospitals are of those who are having waning antibodies as they have completed six months after the vaccination. Those who are suffering from comorbid conditions like diabetes, hypertension, cancer and other immunecompromised conditions are at risk. Virus enters the human body through the nose and that region is not fully protected. Dr Kiran M., senior government doctor at Nizamabad Medical College said it has been noted that vaccinated people are also carriers of the virus. “The virus enters the human body and replicates but it cannot attack the organs as they are all vaccine protected. For this reason, the severity of the disease is reduced in those who took the jabs. They do not suffer from complications. Delta variants are highly transmissible and it affects both the vaccinated and unvaccinated,” said Dr Kiran,
