Community hall turns trash point
Trimulgherry residents cry hoarse
Once a busy venue where locals conducted marriages, functions and public meetings, Mahatma Gandhi Community Hall in Trimulgherry is currently being used as a garbage collection point.
Garbage collected from surrounding areas is being dumped into the community hall premises by trucks, before being shifted to the Jawaharnagar dump yard. Walkers, joggers and players, who utilised the football ground adjacent to the community hall, are avoiding the area because of the stink.
Captain G.V. Rami Reddy, a resident of Gayatri Nagar, recalled that the community hall was used for several welfare activities and government programs. “It was a convenient place for weddings, functions and private events,” he said.
S. Narender Reddy of Srinivasa Nagar colony recalled attending several events at the hall. “I have attended many weddings and meetings at the hall, it is now abandoned,” he remarked.
Situated at the heart of the city along Rajiv Rahadari, the hall served as a convenient and economical venue for low-income groups for close to three decades. The premises also house a library with newspapers and books received from donations.
Congress leader P. Rajendran said several representations have been made to Cantonment Board authorities for reviving the community hall.
“It is unfortunate that such a nice community hall is being used as a garbage collection point,” the leader observed.
When contacted, an official of the Cantonment Board said there is a proposal to shift the collection point elsewhere. But that could take time.
