RTA to crack down on old vehicles
Bizarre as it may sound, there are as many as 10,
35,825 vehicles in the state that are being used for 15 years and they continue to ply on the roads without the mandated renewals. This is a major lapse, aver authorities from the transportation department, while apprehending that the figure could be much higher now.
As per the data (as of
5.1.2021) provided by RTA officials, the list includes
8,54,652 motorcycles and around 18,117 cars.
Taking serious exception to the violation, RTA officials have warned owners of all such vehicles of stringent penalties. They have urged owners to go in for reregistration on a priority basis. Even those keen on selling vehicles in scrap have to obtain prior permission of the authorities, who will then delete the vehicle number from the system.
Vehicles that miss out on the registration date will be slapped with a monthly penalty, the rate of which will be increased proportionate to the delay. Deputy transport commissioner K.
Papa Rao said “we are cautioning all those vehicle owners, whose registrations have elapsed after 15 years of use, to immediately reregister. If vehicles are caught during random checking, they will be seized. Penalties will be very high.”

He added “It has come to our notice that some owners are scrapping old vehicles without bringing it to our knowledge.
Actually, there is a procedure for scraping. The vehicle’s chassis number is deleted from the data on being informed.”
