THE HAUTE LIST FOR 2022

As January 2022 sets in, take a look at what fashion statements you can make

It’s natural to feel that a “New Year, new me” should translate into a “new wardrobe” — just so the transition is easily noticeable. As we enter January marking a fresh change in the dateline, the old clothes need to go away too.

THE CLASSIC SPIN

As the Omicron threat hovers, the start of the year indicates a slow progression with a return of the classics.

According to designer Nidhi Jain, after we’ve lived in comfortable clothes for so long, it won’t be easy to get into something unconventional and highfashion. “The classic trends that can be reused and repeated will make a comeback,” she deduces.

INDI LOVE

Designer Gautam Gupta, from the label ‘Asha Gautam’ expects a cheerful fashion scenario in 2022. “I foresee more holidays and breaks for people, so the demand for resort wear like kaftans, maxi and tunic dresses would go up. Patolas fashion will also see a revival of other indigenous weaves. So, in essence, it could be a good year for Indian textiles,” he says.

ALL FOR THE OOMPH

Keeping in mind the Indian market, where buyers look for standout pieces for a special occasion, couturiers are hopeful to see more experiments in bridal- and occasion-wear range.

Designer Anjalee Kapoor from the label ‘Anjalee and Arjun Kapoor’, recommends sheer corsets, which she believes, are following an upward trend. “Couple it with a splendid 3D baroque motifs and textural detailing to add to the X-factor.”

SHINE ON

Fashion designer Mithi Kalra agrees that a big trend in 2022 could be the popularity of tight corsets, empire-style dresses, embellished headbands and long lace gloves.

According to Mithi, another trend that’s been a hit this season is the cat-suit. “For Indian wear, carrying a dupatta along with a sari is a popular trend

among young girls.”

METALLIC MUCH

On the other hand, designer Simran Arya of the label Carousel feels statement pieces will be all the rage for 2022.

“Metallics and shimmer continue to be high on the fashion list. Jackets will remain a wardrobe staple with oversized blazers, tailored blazers and mini jackets making a huge comeback.” she adds.

PEARLS OF WISDOM

Indian clothing has undergone a comfortable makeover postpandemic.

“Pairing a Banarasi suit with a Banarasi potli bag is going to be a big hit. Be it Kamala Harris or Harry Styles, everyone is going to be obsessed with pearls in 2022. Pearls will be seen on clothing, jewellery, bags, and even footwear. The best wedding companions would be \embellished block heels to let one dance the night away without being uncomfortable,” says Laksheeta.

HIP AND HAUTE

Late ’90s and early-to-mid 2000s styles, predominantly Y2K fashion, is a trend going forward.

“Fashion in 2022 has to be sustainable

and responsible with a big ‘No’ to fast fashion trends. Instead, go for unique scarves, wide-leg pants, denimon-denim, funky accessories and cool jewels. Avoid long sweaters, short blazers, poncho, fur vests, skinny jeans and biker shots,” states Saumar J Sharma, founder of Indian Weavers Alliance Inc

RELAXED CO-ORDS FOR WFH

In the third year of the pandemic, a constant trend is the work from home (WFH), which might not fade out anytime soon.

According to Koushiki Majumdar, creative head at Bengaluru-based brand Kaapus, “We feel the co-ords sets, loungewear items like tees, shorts and pyjama sets will continue to be a constant trend for 2022. Classic prints and styles for menswear will make a comeback as they are multifunctional and can be paired with comfy chinos. The cool and casual chinos for men look smashing with formal as well as semi-formal wear, so that would be a big trend for this year.”

THE FUTURE LOOKS BRIGHT

Adding to the list of WFH essentials, Abdon Lepcha, creative director of Cravatex Brand Ltd., emphasises minimalism, utilitarian athleisure and future tech-inspired clothing.

“The WFH has created a new culture of how we can be fashionable and not just wear clothes. Whether it’s a sweatshirt, joggers, an oversized hoodie or pyjama-inspired athleisure that makes you feel comfortable, it’s the easiest way to be at home, at work or just lounge around. Unicolour sets, paired pieces will be seen as the upcoming trends for 22’. Utilitarian Athleisure infused with utility details like cargo pockets will appeal to people,”Abdon adds.
