Numaish stall holders vacate expo premises

Having been kept on tenterhooks all these days and with no signs of this year’s numaish getting the nod, almost all stall holders from other states have left the city, lock, stock and barrel. Even local shopkeepers, who are still hanging around, are packing their bags to leave the exhibition grounds.

It may be recalled that after the exhibition was formally inaugurated by Governor Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan, the city police ordered a shutdown till January 10 following rising instances of Covid cases in the city. However, with no further instructions on this front, the numaish is as good as closed for this year.

Carpenters, who had installed stalls, were told by the All-India Industrial Exhibition Society to collect their materials after January 20.

This is the third year-ina-row that the city folk will be missing the popular annual feature.

Though the Society authorities urged the stall allottees to wait for a final word from the government, most of them applied for refund before January 10. However, they all returned to their respective states the day their deposits were refunded, sources in the Society said.

Aditya Margam, general secretary of AIIE Society said they only go by government instructions.
