Garbage heaps in Bhoiguda irk locals
THOUSANDS OF commuters and the residents who pass along the road on a daily basis have to hold their breath for a few seconds to avoid the filthy smell.
While the civic authorities are making tall claims about the hygiene and cleanliness of the state capital, a heap of uncollected garbage has been lying on Bhoiguda road that connects Secunderabad Railway Station bus stop to Bansilalpet via Bhoiguda stand a blot to the megalopolis touted to be one of the most liveable cities in the world.
Residents of Bhoiguda complain that the stench emanating from the decomposed garbage has been causing health hazards not only to the residents of Bhoiguda, but also the commuters, pedestrians and the employees of South Central Railways (SCR). Thousands of commuters and the residents who pass along the road on a daily basis have to hold their breath for a few seconds to avoid the filthy smell.
The garbage dump, close to the SCR luggage outlet, and the railway police headquarters building, has been partially collected by the municipal authorities for the past six months.
Residents complain that as there are no garbage collecting bins provided by the authorities in their locality, the garbage occupies half of the road, making it difficult for the commuters and the passer-by.
Though a mini garbage van belonging to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) collects garbage daily, the very next day again the garbage gets piled up in the same area.
“We make at least one trip a day, our vehicle cannot accommodate all the garbage on a single trip.
The diesel rates are so high that we cannot make more than one trip a day,” G. Veera, a garbage collector said. There are GHMC rickshaw pullers who collect garbage but since the quantity is more, we will need two mini trucks to make at least two trips a day, he said.
“The GHMC should install two or three big covered garbage collection boxes so that they can easily jack them in their trucks. Frequently inhaling bad smells can cause serious health issues especially to the children,” P. Subadra, a nurse, said.
“I have to pass this road daily as there is no other way to get home. I have bought an extra mask to get rid of the filthy smell,” M. Manjula, a resident of Bhoiguda, said.
“There are stray dogs around the garbage that really scare me. I cover my nose with my fingers while passing the road that leads to my house,” B. Vinay, a student who resides in Bansilalpet, said.
