Shah for CBI probe into BJYM worker’s death

Terms death as ‘political murder’; MHA seeks report from WB

- RAJIB CHOWDHURI | DC KOLKATA, MAY 6

Union home minister Amit Shah demanded a CBI probe into the “political murder” of a young BJP worker, who went missing under mysterious circumstances in Kolkata, during the second and final day of his West Bengal tour.

Mr Shah raised the call after he cut short his North Bengal itinerary, flew back to Kolkata and visited the spot – an abandoned room of the railway quarters at Cossipore – where the body of the BJYM activist, Arjun Chaurasia (26), was found hanging with his feet touching the floor on Friday morning.

Arjun went missing on Thursday night after attending a preparation meeting with his party workers to welcome Mr Shah at the Kolkata Airport upon his arrival from North Bengal on Friday. The victim’s mother Lachhmina Chaurasia said that he was threatened by the TMC.

Mr Shah said, “Arjun’s murder was political. According to his family, it was gruesome. The BJP

strongly condemns the murder and moved at the Calcutta high court for videography of the postmortem. The probe should be handed over to the CBI.

The ministry of home affairs also took a serious note of the incident and has sought a report from the state government.”

He alleged, “The Trinamul Congress government completed one year of its third

term only a day before. The very next day, the tradition of political violence and killings resumed. Wherever you go, plenty of examples of political violence, revengeful killings and selection of opposition party's workers as targets can be found.”

“We will ensure strongest punishment of the accused, whoever they are, in the court of law. I can assure the people of Bengal that BJP is fighting against injustice. Throttling of the Opposition voice through violence and killings and intimidation have increased more under the TMC rule than that of the Communist regime,” he said.

“I met the Chaurasia family which is hurt by the behavior of the administration. Even the victim’s grandmother was not spared. She was assaulted while the body was snatched away. The post-poll killings have been unabated. The message after one year in power is that they are not going to stop. BJP neither believes in politics of violence nor is scared of it. An attempt to create an environment of fear and conspiracy is underway.

“Earlier the NHRC, SC/ST Commission and NCW mentioned to the court that no state except Bengal have so many cases handed over to the CBI within a year. This shows that the court does not have faith in the law and order under the police.”

The High Court ordered the conduct of the post mortem of the body at the Command Hospital.
