CRACKDOWN STARTS ON FAKE SEED SELLERS

Police officials, along with agricultur­e department officials, decided to crack the whip on businessme­n who are supplying spurious seeds to farmers in districts. They erected banners in villages asking farmers to check the brands before purchasing seeds for cultivatio­n.

A number of cases have been registered against the seed sellers for cheating farmers by selling spurious seeds. The police started a special drive in all districts in the state to prevent the spurious seed supply to farmers.

Suryapet superinten­dent of police (SP) Rajendrapr­asad said they had seized `20 crore worth spurious seeds last season and detained two notorious offenders under PD Act for indulging in selling spurious seeds.

During the present season, the police initiated action on those who are selling spurious seeds in districts.

In Vikarabad district, police arrested two persons, Nadiminti Srinivas Goud and Kurva Malleswam, residents of Kodangal for transporti­ng spurious seeds of cotton illegally.

When the accused were travelling on a bike AP 10 AZ 3611 possessing spurious seeds, the police detained them. With the agricultur­al officials confirming the seed packets as expired, the police registered cases under Section 420 (cheating) and Section 6 (b) of the Seeds Act, 1966 and Section 7 of the Essential Commoditie­s Act, 1955.

In Nalgonda, SP Rema Rajeswari formed special task force teams with the assistance of agricultur­e department officials to prevent spurious seed supply to farmers. The SP directed the seeds shop owners and dealers to display stock boards of seeds available in their shops and explain about the brands of seeds to prevent spurious seed supply to farmers.
