Nigerian held for cheating women on matrimonial site
● THE ARRESTED were habitual fraudsters and had got registered in different matrimonial sites with fake names.
● AFTER THE victim gave money, the accused stopped responding to her.
A Nigerian national was arrested by the Rachakonda cybercrime on Tuesday for cheating gullible women on international matrimonial sites.
The accused, Amara Fanny (24), who impersonated himself as a non-resident Indian (NRI) and cheated women, was nabbed from Delhi based on a complainant lodged in Rachakonda.
According to the police, the complainant registered her name with a matrimonial site a few weeks ago and was looking for a groom. The accused Amara and his friend K. Finich of Nigeria, who is absconding, contacted the victim stating that he was an NRI and wanted to marry her.
A few days later the victim received a call from an unknown person who claimed to be one of the staff from the airport and informed her that an NRI landed at the airport with a lot of foreign goods was caught by the officials and demanded a huge amount for his release.
After the victim paid a huge amount through internet banking, both the accused stopped responding to her phone. Immediately she lodged a complaint with the cybercrime police.
Amara Fanny and Finch were habitual online fraudsters who got registered in different matrimonial sites with fake names, mails IDs and photos, said the police.
Based on technical evidence collected, the cybercrime team nabbed the accused in Delhi sent to judicial custody on a transit warrant, Mahesh Bhagwat, Rachakonda police commissioner said in an official press release.
