SPARKLE IN YOUR HAIR

FAIRY HAIR OR HAIR TINSEL IS A CONCEPT THAT DEBUTED IN THE 90’S AND HAS MADE A STRONG COMEBACK IN TODAY’S TIMES AS WELL.

- BINDU GOPAL RAO Yuba and Hinshara, Co-Founder, Manetain

If you are looking to add some magic to glam up your hair look/hairstyle, especially for a special occasion or a festival, there is a way to add an element of tinsel with the concept of fairy hair.

THE SPECIFICS

These tinsels come in an array of colours and finishes, the most popular ones being the soft pink hue iridescent tinsel which we imagine is probably the closest to a fairy's hair. Beyoncé made the tinsel technique popular when she wore it at the 52nd Grammy Awards in 2010, and the trend has resurfaced years later. Y2K trends are heavily influencing current ones, such as feathers, butterfly clips, and bohemian headscarves, and the most recent addition to the list is a hair extension fad known as tinsel hair or fairy hair. "Clipping strands of metallic tinsel into different portions of your hair to produce the illusion of colorful and sparkling extensions or temporary highlights is known as fairy hair. The glistening strands are tucked into hairlike extensions, and the result is stunning," says Arpan Madhai Beck, Founder, Treato, a salon discovery platform. Hair tinsel extensions are not the same as conventional extensions and do not harm your hair and can be washed, blowdried, and styled with ease when done professionally. Also, because the extensions come in a variety of colours, the look works for any hair colour and is ideal if you want to liven up your hair and add a touch of colour without dyeing it.

SHINE ON

You have probably seen your favorite celebrities and influencers wearing hair tinsel on red carpets and on special occasions. If you have curly hair, you will need to match your

hair texture with a curling iron. "First, you must consider the cut and style of your hair. Give your hairstylist an idea of how you style your hair daily so they can choose the appropriate placement so you can flaunt it in a variety of ways. The singleknot approach is ideal for people with fine or medium hair. Bringing the tinsel through a loop and tying it into a single slip knot is the best approach although it also looks great in braids, half-up, half-down 'dos, cornrows, and simply worn down. If you are doing deep conditioning, especially if you have curly hair, make sure to massage the roots as gently as possible to keep the rings in place,” says Yuba and Hinshara, CoFounder, Manetain, a natural, plant-based hair care brand. Swati Gupta, Director and Head of Creative Development, Bodycraft Spa & Salon adds, "these shiny strands are just attached to your hair near the root and give it a little shine and shimmer. They shed as and when your natural hair does and cause little to no damage. The main aspect to keep in mind while opting for a fairy hair look is that it does require straightening or some amount

of styling to make it pop."

MANE MANIA

Fairy Hair is a low maintenance, quick way to add colour and sparkle to your hair in a non-permanent way. The process usually involves tying individual tinsels around a few strands of your hair, close to your scalp. The tinsels typically last for about 8-12 weeks but can last longer if well taken care of. Pranav Chetal, Managing Partner, Looks Salon, Bangalore says, "while you can do it yourself at home, hair tinsel is also available at most salons. It's recommended to get it done professionally as they ensure that the roots are not damaged in the process and the tinsel stays on for longer. Have a detailed discussion with the hairstylist before starting the process and give your hairstylist an idea about how you style your hair daily for them to pick understand where to place the extension."

ACCESSORISE RIGHT

The accessory you choose must compliment your hairstyle. Longer hair that is braided, curled or twisted in an updo looks better with oversized headbands, giant scrunchies in see-through fabrics, hair clips, and barrettes. Bob looks great with hair bands, little clips, and pins. Asha Hariharan, Education Director, Enrich Beauty says, “It depends on your look or how much drama you want to create or what kind

of vibe you would like to showcase. Your fairy hair can be accessories with anything that you want. Velvet bows, dire monte clips, lots of glittered clips, and buckles go well with

tinseled glittery.”
