Gritty Vritti sinks swim record

Ruchita, Srilakshmi, Dhatri, Basheer too bag medals at Khelo India Youth Games

Swimmer Vritti Agarwal created a new meet record of 9:24.32 seconds while clinching the gold — Telangana’s first — in the Girls 800 metres freestyle in the Khelo India Youth Games in Ambala, Haryana, on Wednesday.

The previous Khelo India record was 09:26:19, held by Khushi Dinesh of Karnataka.

Vritti was followed by Aanya Wala (9:25.59) of Maharashtr­a and Karnataka’s Shirin (9:26.62).

Namayi Ruchita brought more cheer to the Telangana camp when she won the silver medal in 100 metres hurdles with a time of 14.28 seconds, coming behind Karnataka’s Unnati Bollanda, who clocked 14.00 seconds.

Andhra Pradesh too continued their good run in weightlift­ing. In the girls section, Chukka Srilakshmi lifted gold in the 81kg while Kurnool’s Palati Dhatri bagged silver in the 76kg. SK Lal Basheer captured silver in the boys 89 kg category.

Meanwhile, Haryana’s allconquer­ing grapplers wrested back the lead for their state, winning four out of the five gold on offer on the final day of their event. The hosts collected two more gold in track and field to take their overall tally to 30 gold, 23 silver and 33 bronze

to surge past Maharashtr­a

(26G, 25S, 22B), who could only manage a solitary gold on Day 6.

during the Commonweal­th Games trials, dominated the Girls 53kg category to clinch her second Khelo India gold in 3 years.

She was christened Antim as her parents wanted her, the fifth daughter, to be their last. But she has made

it a habit of finishing first every time she enters a competitio­n.

The Hisar girl proved too strong for her opponents, winning three bouts by technical superiorit­y and one by a fall. In the final, she did face a determined
