FLOODS WREAK HAVOC, 4 DEAD IN LANDSLIDES IN GARO HILLS

Amidst the alert of heavy rainfall in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya for next two days, floods and landslides have once again started wreaking havoc in Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh.

At least four people, including two minors, died in two incidents of landslides in the Garo Hills region of Meghalaya on Thursday.

The incident occurred at Jebalgre under Gambegre block. The deceased have been identified as Pretish Marak, 12-year-old Almos Marak and 3-year-old Aimbe Marak.

Another death has been reported from Betasing block in South West Garo Hills.

According to reports, the situation is grim in both — South West Garo Hills and West Garo Hills with heavy rains causing landslides and flash floods in several parts of the districts.

JCBs have been deployed to clear the debris.

One timber bridge over Bandra river connecting Gilmatdam village and Dombagre village under Dalu PS jurisdicti­on has also been washed away.

The heavy rain has also hit the wildlife of the state with residents recovering dead body many wild animals in debris coming down from hill tops with rain water.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority has also issued an alert in landslide and flood-prone areas after long hours of incessant rainfall across the state, affecting surface communicat­ion temporaril­y in many areas.

Torrential rains which are leading to rising water levels in rivers have triggered floods in Assam’s South Salmara Mankachar district as waters submerge several villages, affecting hundreds of families.
